Biography: Mike Nichols was born Mikhail Igor Peschkowsky on November 6, 1931 in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of Brigitte and Pavel Peschkowsky, a physician. His family fled to America in 1938 to escape the Nazis, and moved to New York City in April 1939. He was married to Patricia Scott from 1957-1960, Margot Callas from 1963-1974 (with whom he had his daughter, Daisy Nichols), Annabel Davis-Goff until 1986 (with whom he had two children: Max Nichols and Jenny Nichols) and ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer in 1988 who survived him.

He was one of only a few directors (such as Orson Welles and Elia Kazan) to achieve popular and artistic acclaim in both the theatre and film industries. Nichols launched the film career of the then-unknown Dustin Hoffman with "The Graduate" in 1967. The marquees of Broadway theatres were dimmed in his honor on November 21, 2014.
