Biography: George Smith Lindsey was born on December 17, 1928 in Fairfield, Alabama to George Ross Lindsey and Alice Smith. He studied biology and physical education at Florence State Teachers College. He spent three years in the Air Force before moving to New York. He then studied at the American Theatre Wing and performed as a comedian. He became known for his performance of Goober Pyle on "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s. He married Joyanne Herbert, and the couple divorced. He is survived by his companion, Anne Wilson, his two children, and his two grandsons.
