ABOUT THIS THEATRE
Description
Under Thomas Edison's personal supervision, the Lyceum became the first American theatre to be lighted entirely by electricity. Steele MacKaye founded and managed it after leaving his post at the Madison Square. But he spent only one year managing the theatre he built. He was succeeded by actress Helen Dauvrey, then Daniel Frohman (1885-1902), who managed it to great success as one of the last remaining stock companies in the city. In 1902, it was torn down, the site annexed by the Met Life building.
