THE DEVILS was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in February, 1961. John Whiting revised the play just prior to his untimely death in 1963. The revised version was presented on Broadway in 1965.
During a performance late in the run of this production, Anne Bancroft fell off a ladder onstage. She ended up hospitalized for back pain and spams. Zoe Caldwell assumed her role for the remainder of the run.
