Irene Worth was originally cast in the role of Madame Desmermortes, with Marian Seldes slated to perform the role at Saturday matinees. Worth suffered a stroke right before previews were set to begin on April 1, 1999; previews were delayed until April 3, at which point Marian Seldes took on the role full-time.
