Primarily known as a caricaturist, Al Hirschfeld was a renowned American artist best known for his distinctive, simple black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. In addition to his Tony and Drama Desk Awards mentioned below, he was also the recipient of the 1984 Brooks Atkinson Award for Lifetime Achievement.

On June 21, 2003, Broadway's Martin Beck theatre on West 45th Street was renamed in his honor.
