Biography: Eli Herschel Wallach was born on December 7, 1915 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York to Abraham and Bertha Wallach. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin, and then earned a master's degree in education at City College. He studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and then served in the Medical Corps during World War II. He became a founding member of the Actors Studio after the war. He married actress Anne Jackson, and they often acted together. His children are Katherine, Peter, and Roberta Wallach.

Film/TV Credits: Film credits include: "The Magnificent Seven," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "Mystic River," "The Ghost Writer," "The Godfather: Part III," "The Holiday," and "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps." Television credits include: "ER," "Murder, She Wrote," "Batman," "Nurse Jackie," "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," "To Tell the Truth," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," Highway to Heaven," and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip."

Other Awards: Honorary Oscar "For a lifetime's worth of indelible screen characters" in 2011. Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Drama for "Poppies Are Also Flowers" in 1967.

Trivia:
He released his autobiography, "The Good, The Bad And Me: In My Anecdotage," in 2005.
The marquees of Broadway theaters were dimmed in his honor on June 27, 2014.
