ABOUT THIS THEATRE
Description
The second auditorium to be named the Broadway, it was built in 1847. Modeled after London's Haymarket, it was--at the time--the largest theatre ever built in New York. It was intended to draw the crowds that had flocked to the Park Theatre, but it could not compete with William E. Burton's Chambers Street Theatre. The venue was later converted to an amphi-theatre and presented equestrian melodramas, but this didn't last either. In 1859, it was demolished and warehouses took its place.
