This production had its pre-Broadway tryout at Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theatre in late December 1949. During this time, several characters (Muriel, Girl/Peroxide Blonde, Cal, Soldier, Barman, Monkey Man, etc.) were cut. Some of the actors playing those roles (Phyllis Love, Eugenia Wilson, and Frederic de Wilde) assumed understudy assignments for the Broadway production.
